This part of the book used to be called What To Live With. It is now called Who Holds the Hand. The essays are the same. Only the name changed. You can find them here: Who Holds the Hand.
“What to live with” made AI sound like weather. Something that happens to us, that we put up with. But the more I looked, the less weather I found. Every rule in an AI was written by someone. Every wall was built after someone pushed. Every value was chosen in some room, by some board, under some law. The machine in the middle wants nothing and holds nothing.
So the real question is not how we live with it. It is whose hand is on it. Follow the hands far enough and you run out of floor. The last hand may be yours.
